Know your heritage

Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many
towers. Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you
may describe them to future generations.
Psalm 48:12-13

Here the Jews were to take note of their city and to rejoice in its strength and grandeur, this city was the place that surrounded their temple, its what made them a unique people, it was their heritage, take away the city, the people have little left.

There are so many things today that have become important to the way we do church. They may be practises, they made be rituals or they may be something different, but what is truly important. What is our heritage? What should we be protected and making mention of.

What made the city of Jerusalem special? It was who resided there, King David in this case, but more than that, it was God’s dwelling on earth.
The church is like Jerusalem it is a place where God inhabits on earth, it’s not a place, but a people, something that is spiritual and organic that moves (or should do) in tune with the great orchestartor, Christ. We are not here to remember buildings and manmade ideas but that which makes us what we are. That is The Word of God, this includes his rituals- baptism and communion, his doctrine– the deity of Christ, the resurrection, his second coming, his purposes– salvation by grace and helping those in need, loving our neighbour.

If the future generations of the church are going to continue in our great heritage lets teach them these walls and these citadels. The things of man will come to nothing, but the things of the Lord will last forever.

This is why as a church we put so much emphasis on teaching the truth of God’s word, because if this is torn down we become nothing. This is my daily bread, your very word, living in me...I’m desperate for you as the song goes.

Can I encourage you, no, please let me be stronger, can I urge you to come where you can to any of our studies, be it on a Sunday Night or in house groups. This is your heritage, you need to know it, so you can describe it to future generations.
